History of GJS

The establishment of Gnana Jyothi School & PU College (GJS) in 1983–84 was made possible by the vision and life experiences of its founder, Late Sri B.M. Murthy. Born in 1947 in the village of Hireballa, Chikkaballapura District, Sidlaghatta Taluk, he faced the tragedy of losing both parents at a young age. With the support of teachers, grandparents, and family, he pursued his education with determination, completing a B.A. from Kolar Government College and a Master of Arts from Mysore University’s Manasa Gangothri.

A man of resilience and hard work, he began his journey as an agriculturist, pioneering grape cultivation in the region and expanding his farmland from a modest 3–4 acres to nearly 40 acres. In 1978–79, he established the Yamuna Hybrid Seeds Factory, where he served as Managing Director. His entrepreneurial spirit soon found a higher calling — the creation of an educational institution that would transform the lives of rural children.

In 1983–84, along with his friends, he co-founded Gnana Jyothi School, with the vision of bringing quality education to rural students at a time when such opportunities were scarce. Under his guidance, the school flourished, earning recognition for its discipline, results, and student-friendly environment.

Beyond education, Sri B.M. Murthy also served the community as a respected leader and social worker. As a multiple-term Panchayat Chairman and President of the Vasathi Samiti, he was instrumental in building hundreds of homes for the poor, leaving a lasting mark on social welfare. His politics was never about power but about service, fairness, and integrity — values that continue to inspire the institution today.

His untimely passing in 2001 was a profound loss, yet his family remained steadfast in carrying forward his dream. A major milestone was achieved in 2014, with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art new campus, symbolizing the school’s growth and modern outlook.

To honor his legacy, the school conducts the annual B.M. Murthy Talent Exam (BMMTE), offering free education to deserving rural students. Each year, nearly 800 students participate, and 20 students (10 each from Grade 5 and Grade 8) are selected for scholarships. So far, around 100 students have benefited, with many going on to excel in higher education and professional careers.

Today, as GJS enters its 42nd year, it stands as a living tribute to the vision of Sri B.M. Murthy — a man who was at once a farmer, educationist, leader, and family man. His values of simplicity, service, and education as the truest wealth continue to guide the school in nurturing generations of learners and leaders.
